CUT & PASTE / NEEDLE & THREAD - Back to basics

Several weeks ago, I picked up one of my favorite hobbies, picture books. It takes a lot of cutting, trimming and gluing, but the results are well worth it (at least according to those who looked at them). More recently I tried my hand at little girls summer skirts and dresses. That came more out of necessity, first for Naomi, then to make money. It gives me great enjoyment. In the beginning I was sewing by hand! Then I shopped and bought a Brother electronic sewing machine. Now even jeans are turning into skirts, and summer dresses are quick to make. Ha! What a blast! If I can say this and be modest, my pieces are turning quite nice. Now selling, which way will be the best for me? Not sure yet. That's another subject.

But all this  got me thinking about life today, instant this and instant that, pre-made this and pre-made that. Not only are the end results many times less than great, but this instant business in fact cheats us of the good feeling we get when something we spent time on turns out awesome.
We need, I need to go back to basics. I'm doing it. Well maybe it is like the salmons going upstream... but the difference is that we won't die but in fact we'll live a  better, fuller life. People are hungry for it and don't even know it. Our world is so caught up in fake everything.  Open up your heart, open your door, invite someone in and share a little of your life. Be real.
I'm just hungry for the real deal if you please. No potato chips, I'll be hungry in no time again.
Other words for real: genuine, bona fide, heartfelt. Nothing compares to the real thing.
When I received the Holy Ghost, it was the real thing. I'm going back to where I first believed, to where I first met Jesus. Back to the basics.
Interesting fact:  Portuguese and Spanish origin, real literally means 'royal'(adjective used as a noun).

Catherine,

You are so right. I can't sew worth beans, but I am doing more of the real thing when it comes to cooking. There is nothing as good as homecooking, real mashed potatoes, oven baked macaroni and cheese, etc. etc.

Of course, nothing can compare to the "real thing", especially when it comes to the things of the Spirit. I believe our world is tired of shallow Christianity. They need a good dose of old fashioned Pentecost and a good old home Bible study. May God help us to dish it out. Good post.

Blessings,

Carol Connell

"Easy come easy go", "A stitch in time saves nine", etc. In fact I'm joking, but I agree with you: we all need to go back to basic values or stick with what is meaningful. This doesn't mean we have to reject technology or what's right in our time, of course. In French we say: "Il ne faut pas jeter le bébé avec l'eau du bain" ; I couldn't find the equivalent in English.

Hi Carol,

Home cooking is the best! Nothing like it you are right. Mmm... macaroni and cheese... hungry just to think about it!
When it comes to the things of the Spirit, Lord help us to dish it out generously.

Merci pour la visite. Dieu vous bénisse ma soeur.

Ah! Gilles, c'est vrai. Nothing wrong with technology. Its more about how we use it, what we do with it. I appreciate your comment. I believe we say "Don't throw the baby out with the bath water" just like you :)
Nous sommes de la même génération je pense. J'entend encore mon grand-papa maternel dire " faire et défaire, c'est apprendre à bien faire". Un peu hors sujet mais dans la même famille d'idées.

Catherine,

I would never dream of asking a woman her age! That's the way we were brought up in my generation... you know... a man doesn't do certain things and doesn't even think about certain things. I'm 63.

Ha! Ha! Gilles! you're right. You know my e-mail address, is that a clue or what? This generation is like another world...

The basics are what really count - and are our only tangible substances. Returning to the landmarks that made our country great is what I want to do - particularly the landmarks set by the Lord.

"Don't remove the old landmarks". How tragic the results...
When I work for AT&T, my Japanese counterpart would lament when someone made a one digit mistake. In the end the whole system was off. We would work go back to the original entry, sometimes way back.
